Solar installation FAQs
What is a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)?
A PPA allows your business to access affordable solar energy with no upfront investment. You only pay for the power you use at a lower rate than public electricity, with a fixed annual increase of around 7%, providing stability against unpredictable public electricity price hikes.
What happens to the system after 10 years?
At the 10-year mark, Grosteel upgrades the inverter and batteries at no cost to the client. This ensures the system continues to operate efficiently with the latest technology. A second upgrade is provided after 20 years, maximising the value and performance of longer-term PPAs.
Do I have to take a PPA deal, or can I buy the system outright?
No, a PPA is not mandatory. Clients who prefer to own their system outright can opt for an upfront purchase. This allows for full control and independence from the agreement terms, with the same high-quality installation and support.
What if public electricity price increases are lower than Grosteel’s 7% fixed rate?
If the increase in public electricity prices is lower than Grosteel’s 7% fixed annual rate, Grosteel will match the increase in public electricity. This ensures your costs remain competitive or lower than Eskom’s, providing peace of mind and cost control.
How is my electricity usage calculated under the PPA?
You only pay for the power generated and consumed from the solar system. This means you’re never overcharged and can directly benefit from lower energy costs during times of higher solar output, such as summer months.
How does Grosteel’s PPA compare to public electricity rates?
Currently, Grosteel’s solar rates are comparable to public electricity, but the 7% fixed annual increase is significantly lower than public electricity, which is expected to rise by 32% in February 2025. Over time, the savings with Grosteel grow, allowing you to lock in a cost-effective solution against rising energy costs.
Who owns the solar system under a PPA?
A funding partner retains ownership of the solar installation on commercial properties for the duration of the PPA (typically 20 years). After this period, ownership may transfer to your business, or you may choose to renew the agreement.
Is there any upfront cost involved in a PPA?
No upfront costs are required for commercial/agricultural clients under the PPA model. You only pay for the electricity generated and used, making this a hassle-free, budget-friendly solution.
What about maintenance – is that covered?
Yes, all maintenance is included in the PPA. Grosteel handles the upkeep and ensures reliable power generation, so you won’t have to worry about system maintenance or additional costs.
How does the fixed rate increase work?
With Grosteel’s PPA, your energy rate increases at a stable 7% annually, far lower than public electricity’s unpredictable hikes. This predictable increase allows for better budget planning and long-term savings.
What if I have a problem with the system?
Grosteel ensures reliable power and will handle any necessary maintenance or repairs, similar to how public electricity works. If there’s an issue, our support team will address it promptly to keep your power supply uninterrupted.
How does the PPA benefit my business in the long term?
The PPA model provides immediate savings compared to public electricity rates, and as those rates continue to rise, your savings with Grosteel’s stable pricing only increase. Over time, this results in substantial cost savings and a reliable energy source with predictable budgeting.
Can I install a solar system on a residential property under a PPA?
Currently, our PPA is focused on commercial installations. Residential clients are encouraged to self-fund installations for long-term savings and reduced dependency on public electricity. However, we offer guidance on financing options for residential solar installations, and there are residential options available – enquire with us.
Which industries benefit most from a solar PPA?
Our commercial/agricultural solar solutions are ideal for sectors with high energy needs, such as agriculture, manufacturing, and office buildings. Grosteel’s clients in these sectors have already seen high yields and significant savings, proving the reliability and value of our PPA.
